Fulbright Summer Institute: Freshmen and Sophomores

Study in the United Kingdom during the summer after your freshman or sophomore year.

You're invited to apply for a Fulbright Summer Institute if you are a freshman or a sophomore who:

  1. Is a US citizen
  2. Has a GPA of at least 3.70
  3. Are NOT planning to graduate before May 2022
  4. Has NOT spent more than four weeks outside the U.S. in the past five years

These Institutes allow students to study at a university in the United Kingdom for three or four weeks in the summer of 2020 with (most) expenses paid. (Some Institutes require you to pay for some meals.) If you want to apply for a grant in the summer of 2020, heres the timeline.

Attend one of the offered Information Sessions posted on Hopes Campus Calendar.

By December 2, 2019

You may do this anytime before this date, but please do it by the date.

You will be considered a serious candidate only after submitting the items listed below. You can always change your mind later.

If you are planning to apply for a Fulbright Summer Institute, please fill out our Google form, "." 

This form wil ask you for the following information:

  1. Your full name.
  2. Your phone number.
  3. The title of the Fulbright Summer Institute to which you plan to apply, (Choose only one).
  4. The e-mails of three faculty referees who can speak to your qualifications for this award.
  5. Your GPA, as of the end of the Fall semester of 2019 (if you have onefirst-semester freshmen may leave this blank until they get their grades.)
  6. Graduation year and month.

Attend one of the two mandatory writing seminars, both of which will be held in the Rare Books Room in Van Wylen Library.  If you really cant attend either one (and we do expect Fulbright candidates to make an effort to attend), then please contact Professor Gibbs (gibbs@hope.edu) to make arrangements to meet with her privately.

(or earlier but be sure your December 2019 grades are on it)

Order a copy of your transcript from the Registrars Office. You may not use the multi-page transcript available on your KnowHopePlus account. You must order a transcript from the Registrar. An issued to student transcript is okay.

As soon as you decide for sure to apply, but no later than January 17, 2020

Talk to your referees, and make sure they are willing and able to write your recommendations by February 10, 2020. Talk to them about the Summer Institute you want to attend, and show them your Personal Statement, as soon as it is in good enough shape. If they agree, enter their information on your application, so they get the link to the recommendation form.

Over Christmas break

Start drafting your Personal Statement and your Essay Response.

Turn in a draft of your Personal Statement and your Essay Response electronically, as a Word doc, attached to an e-mail. Your document must be double-spaced, with your name and the type of essay in the filename, sent to all three advisors: remillard@hope.edu, maiullo@hope.edu and gibbs@hope.edu.

See the Fulbright Summer Institutes web site and the Fulbright Summer Institutes Writing Requirements for information about preparation of these documents. Keep working on them, even after youve sent drafts to the advisors. We will also want to see your 300-word short answers by January 23. (You dont need to do them by January 16). 

We dont have much time, so we want to see new drafts of your statements once a week, throughout January, 2020 and the first week of February, 2020.

Make and keep an appointment with Professor Gibbs, Professor Maiullo or Professor Remillard to discuss your drafts. You may make appointments by e-mail. (gibbs@hope.edu, maiullo@hope.edu, remillard@hope.edu)

Between December 5, 2019, and January 25, 2020

Start and complete your on-line application form.  Dont upload your personal statement or your essay response until they have been approved by Professor Gibbs, Professor Maiullo, or Professor Remillard.
